Interactive sodium tool

Sodium to Salt Converter

Convert sodium to an equivalent amount of sodium chloride, or convert sodium chloride back to sodium.

How to interpret the result

The result is an estimate based on the values you enter. Reference comparisons provide context, not a personal sodium prescription.

Medical information limits

If you have a medical condition or an individualized sodium restriction, follow guidance from your qualified healthcare professional. Read the medical disclaimer.

How this tool works

The Sodium to Salt Converter translates between elemental sodium and an equivalent mass of sodium chloride (ordinary table salt).

Inputs

  • Conversion direction
  • Sodium in milligrams or salt in grams

Method

Sodium chloride is approximately 39.34% sodium by molecular mass. Sodium to salt: sodium grams ÷ 0.3934. Salt to sodium: salt grams × 0.3934 × 1,000 mg/g.

Assumptions

“Salt” means sodium chloride. Specialty salts can contain other minerals, but sodium chloride remains their principal salt component.

Limitations

The conversion estimates chemical equivalence. It does not measure how much sodium a specific prepared food contains.
