Recipe calculator

Recipe Sodium Calculator

Add the sodium contributed by each ingredient, choose the number of finished servings, and estimate the sodium in one serving of the recipe.

How the calculation works

The calculator adds the sodium amounts you enter for all ingredients. It then divides the recipe total by the number of finished servings.

Sodium per serving = total recipe sodium ÷ finished servings

Enter sodium for the quantity actually used

If a broth label lists 600 mg sodium per cup and the recipe uses two cups, enter 1,200 mg for that ingredient. If a can contains multiple servings, calculate the amount used before adding it to the recipe.

Added salt belongs in the recipe total

If you add table salt, use the Sodium to Salt Converter to estimate its sodium contribution and add that amount as another ingredient.

What the estimate cannot capture

The result depends on the values you enter. Sodium can change when brands, package sizes, serving assumptions or ingredient quantities change. Draining or rinsing a food may also change its sodium content, so a label value may not perfectly represent the amount that remains in the finished dish.
