Ingredient-list tool
Hidden Sodium Ingredient Finder
Paste an ingredient list and this tool will flag sodium-containing ingredients it can recognize. It does not estimate milligrams because ingredient lists do not disclose how much of each ingredient is present.
What this tool can tell you
The ingredient list can reveal sodium-containing ingredients even when the word “salt” does not appear prominently. FDA consumer guidance gives examples including monosodium glutamate (MSG), sodium bicarbonate, sodium nitrite and sodium benzoate.
What it cannot tell you
Ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight, but the list does not provide the exact quantity of each ingredient. The Nutrition Facts panel is therefore the correct place to find the total sodium amount for a serving.
Use this with the label
After identifying possible sodium sources, use the Nutrition Label Sodium Calculator to calculate the sodium in the amount you actually eat.
